Notes and observations

Feeling the need to observe the stars

In the summertime in Florida, not much shuts down anymore thanks to air conditioning, but with the heat, the humidity and the mosquitoes there is one activity that stops: astronomy.

The sky is still there and just as beautiful as ever – if there aren’t leftover storm clouds from the afternoon boomers – but dragging out the equipment and setting up means getting eaten by bugs and sweating everywhere. Even in the lines of your hands, and that’s bad for the optics.

Still, Saturn is shining beautifully, and the summer triangle of Vega, Altair and Deneb makes mount alignment a snap, even if you need a towel to dry off after every alignment star. But the reality is that the temperature doesn’t even go down that much at night anymore, and even in the very early morning, say around 4 a.m., it’s still hot and humid out.

That makes observing a pain.

At some point, the evenings will mean cool temperatures, and again I will be able to take out the scope without losing a river of sweat. In the meantime, I just have to grin and bear it.
